Midlife Women Bloggers: We're Here and We Have Something to Say
Okay, so we're not exactly in the majority. Most of the voices you hear in the world of blogs are a bit younger. They have Facebook accounts, frequent MySpace and work the social bookmarking sites like StumbleUpon, Digg and others until their fingers bleed.
These energetic little devils are tearing up the blog scene. They've grown up with a facility with all things technological that most of us mid-lifers will never acquire. Never-the-less, we are out there and we have something to say. You might want to take a moment to listen...wisdom does come with age after all.
I recently connected with a number of women bloggers who, like it or not, would be considered middle-aged. We tend to get a little lost in the blog shuffle sometimes, but we do have a lot of great things to share. So I thought I'd introduce you to a few midlife women bloggers that it might benefit you to know.
PunditMom is a self-described "recovering attorney and pundit wannabe" who really seems to have her finger on the pulse of politics in America. She has a great post on Hillary Clinton and how her candidacy might be judged if we weren't viewing it through a Bill lens. If you liked my post on "Coming Together for Change", this post is worth the look.
Jill, at Writes Like She Talks, shoots straight from the hip. Her commentaries are informative and to the point.
MsMeta, blogs about anything and everything that women hold dear...great websites for women, shoes, books, shoes, music and, did I mention, shoes?
Karen, at Midlife's a Trip, discusses midlife moments, life obstacles, health issues and much more. She is also a life coach. If you're looking for genuine, midlife specific commentary and information on her life coaching services, take a look at her site.
Merlotmom is wonderful comic relief for us harried mothers who might rather be doing something more interesting than packing lunches and checking homework. Trust me, you always feel better when you're in the company of those who share your pain.
At Growing Older, Sexier and Skinnier, you'll find one woman's take on everything from aging to health to beauty to weight-loss.
ByJane lets you know what's on the top of her mind in a humorous, wonderfully conversational style. She's also been instrumental in uniting we women who are choosing to blog our way through midlife.
Visit Anali's First Amendment to experience her life in words, photos and food - well, mostly food. Ah, a woman after my own heart.
For the everyday ramblings of a work-at-home mom, visit Lynn at After the Dust Settles.
A Different Nest shares the hard-earned knowledge of a mother of a child with special needs. This is a wonderful resource for parents of special needs kids.
Flowers, poetry, stories and more, Ol Granny Sue's got it all. Have a cup of tea with her at Granny Sue's News and Reviews.
Fertility issues are on the minds of many women, especially would-be mid-life moms. For one woman's perspective on living with infertility in a fertile world, visit Coming2Terms.
Telling It Like It Is is a great resource offering useful information on parenting, marriage and relationships.
For some quirky, saying-it-like-it-is musings on life, check out Musing.
Straight-shooting, no holds barred, often humorous ramblings on the issues that plague us at midlife is what you'll find at Diary of a Midlife Crisis. Highly recommended for it's honesty and depth of feeling.
For useful and cool midlife "stuff", visit Allison at Women Bloom.
Confessions from a woman struggling to make it through the trials and tribulations of life in 2008, it's a MadMadgeWorld.
Denise's journal at Not What It Seems gives us interesting thoughts and tid-bits to ponder.
Need a good laugh? The name isn't the only funny thing at Nanny Goats in Panties. Stop by for humorous commentary on just about anything.
Get great ideas, stories and strategies for grabbing the success you want in life from the wise voice of Art of Allowing Mindset. Wonderful and inspiring infromation.
Now, who doesn't love a great new recipe? Check out Recipe Carousel for some wonderful cookies, a new way with escarole or even a drink for the hummingbirds in your garden.
Interesting list isn't it? Middle-aged women have a lot to say and it isn't all about hot flashes and hormones. Who knew? Well, I did, but now so do you. Go and take a look at some of these sites...broaden your horizons...listen to what we have to say. You just might learn something, you young whippersnapper!

Great list! (And thanks for including me.) Isn't it fun to hear all the different conversations going on out there? It's like eavesdropping — on steriods!

Karen and Jill,
You're welcome...this is exciting, isn't it? I'll stop by everyone's site now and then to keep tabs on what you're up to and I guess we'll keep the conversation going at Byjane as long as she lets us?
If anyone has a blog by a midlife woman they would like to submit for inclusion, let me know.

Love the photo. Thanks for adding me to your blogroll. Planning on creating one today (I'm slow on the uptake of all this social media cool trick). Glad to be a part of the conversation.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and adding me in here. I love this. Such a great list you have here. The picture is terrific for this post. I've added you to my blogroll so it'll be easier to stop and say "hi" to you. Hope you posted this on BlogHer for that question "where-did-all-the- middle-aged-bloggers-go?" LOL.
Posted by: Ladybeams | April 05, 2008 at 07:03 AM
Tara,
I hear you...I'm a little slow on the uptake also, but I figured out the blogroll without too much trouble and so will you. Good luck!
Ladybeams,
You know I thought of posting this at Blogher and honestly can't remember if I actually did it or not (middle-aged brain fog strikes again). If I did post it, it would be under feminism and gender...I'll have to go back and check.
Everyone,
Thanks for the great response. About this social bookmarking stuff...I'm not really in complete understanding of it but I know that it is critical if you want to build traffic and a good subscriber list. Do you all have the various icons for StumbleUpon, Digg and others at the bottom of your posts?
I have an account at StumbleUpon and Digg (although I rarely do anything with them)and can stumble and digg some of your posts for you. I'd love it if everyone would do the same for me. We should also look each other up on these sites and link up as "friends". The more we do this for each other, the more traffic we'll get (for those of us who care about such things).. What do you think?

Hi Lori, Thanks for including me as well. I have created a blogroll and you and many here are included. Did you notice the google adsense ad that came up on your blog? It's for incontinence! Gotta love that google! I, too, have a new account on Digg and StumbleUpon and Twitter but damned if I know what to do with them. Maybe someone amongst us who does know can give us all a little lesson? Glad to be a part of this group.
Posted by: merlotmom | April 06, 2008 at 04:02 PM
Hey Merlotmom,
Thanks for pointing out the google ad; you gave me my first laugh of the day!
Thanks also for putting me in your blogroll. We have to figure out the StumbleUpon etc. I'll be looking all of you ladies up there (and maybe at Digg) this week and adding you as friends if I find you. I plan on reading and stumbling posts from your blog and others each week. If you don't have the links for these bookmarking sites at the bottom of your posts, search through your bloghost's help section and find out how to get them there. It makes it much easier to give you a stumble.
Okay, well I've just exhausted my entire knowledge of that subject..very concise, eh?
I'm so glad to be part of this group too. Take care...I'll visit your blog this week.

Very neat Lori. Thanks for all the site links.
It's funny, I had a mid life crisis at age 30. It was so hard to look at my life and think, "what in the world have I done with my life?" While it was hard at the time, I'm so thankful now that I hit that point. It brought me to the point I'm at now and I love what I'm doing. I love blogging and helping people and making a difference.

Jennifer,
Funny, isn't it, how all of the things we go through - the good, the bad and the ugly - make us who we are. All of the struggles are a necessary part of becoming the unique individuals we are meant to be.
I'm at a point in my life where I am finding so many seemingly unrelated threads and so-called "mistakes" in my past suddenly beginning to come together to lead me in a new direction. It's all coming together in a way that I couldn't have anticipated. Who knew?
